Shades of the Southwest: Two Colors That Captured My Heart

As I continue my meandering journey across the country, I’ve been struck by how much the landscape itself, and even the everyday objects within it, contribute to the unique identity of each region. Beyond the grand vistas and historic moments, it’s often the subtle details that linger – like the dominant colors that paint a state’s canvas. Two particular hues have truly captured my eye and imagination as I’ve driven through Texas and New Mexico.

Texas Orange: The Fiery Bloom of the Paintbrush

The first color that imprinted itself on my mind was the vibrant orange of the Texas paintbrush. You know that intense, almost burning orange? That’s the one. Driving along some of the more isolated highways in Texas, especially away from the urban sprawl, I was consistently greeted by vast, undulating fields of these striking wildflowers. You see it everywhere. From the iconic turquoise jewelry that adorns locals and visitors alike, reflecting centuries of Native American artistry, to the painted trim on adobe houses, the signage, and even the state’s license plates. It’s an incredibly versatile color – intense and bright, yet also possessing an earthy elegance. It perfectly encapsulates the unique blend of ancient traditions, vibrant artistry, and the stunning natural environment of New Mexico’s deserts and skies. It’s a color that feels both deeply spiritual and undeniably chic, a constant visual delight that makes the state instantly recognizable.

These two colors, the fiery orange of the Texas paintbrush and the serene turquoise of New Mexico, have become unexpected anchors in my travel memories.
