For nearly a decade, I’ve had the profound privilege of being a driving force behind TEDxCatania (formerly known as TEDxSSC), serving as its licensee, organizer, and curator since October 2014. This journey has been far more than just a role; it’s been a passion project dedicated to bringing “ideas worth spreading” to my community in Sicily and beyond.
As a licensee, I’ve held the unique responsibility of being the official steward of the TEDx brand in Catania. This involves not only adhering to TED’s stringent guidelines to ensure the integrity and quality of every event but also embodying the spirit of independent, local organization. It’s about translating a global mission into a resonant local experience.
My role as an organizer has been a thrilling dive into the intricate world of event production. From securing venues, managing logistics, and overseeing budgets to coordinating volunteers and ensuring a seamless experience for attendees, it’s about transforming a vision into a tangible event. Each TEDxCatania conference is a testament to meticulous planning and the collaborative spirit of a dedicated team.
Perhaps the most intellectually stimulating aspect of my involvement has been my work as a curator. This is where the magic of “ideas worth spreading” truly comes alive. It involves:
- Identifying Compelling Ideas: Shaping the narrative of each event by selecting overarching themes and specific ideas that resonate with contemporary issues, local insights, and global trends.
- Discovering Transformative Voices: Scouring diverse fields to find exceptional speakers—scientists, artists, entrepreneurs, activists, and thinkers—who possess unique perspectives and groundbreaking ideas. This includes rigorous due diligence to ensure content originality and adherence to TED’s non-commercial, non-political ethos.
- Coaching for Impact: Working closely with each speaker to refine their message, hone their delivery, and craft a talk that is not only informative but also inspiring and memorable. My experience as a Communication Coach at Stanford, where I guided founders in articulating complex ideas, has been invaluable in this capacity.
Being a part of TEDxCatania is about more than just organizing talks; it’s about fostering a community of curious minds, sparking conversations that lead to change, and showcasing the incredible innovation and thought leadership present in Catania and beyond. It’s an ongoing commitment to the belief that powerful ideas, when shared effectively, have the ability to transform lives and shape the future.
